Bienvenue au département des langues vivantes
Because Canada is a bilingual country it is important for young Canadians to learn to communicate in both official languages. The federal government has set a goal to double the number of Secondary School graduates who are functionally bilingual by 2013. There are other ways to learn a language, but taking a Core French or Immersion French program throughout Secondary School is probably the easiest. Recent changes to diploma requirements recognize the value of second language learning. Now, in addition to one compulsory credit (usually taken in Grade 9), students who take a second credit in French (or a credit in an international language) may use it as a compulsory credit in the Group 1 Compulsory credits (see diploma requirements: Course Calendar).
There are many reasons to continue the study of French beyond Grade 9.

Canadian Parents for French notes that French is an official language in more than 30 countries and is commonly spoken in many more. It is one of the official working languages of the United Nations, the Red Cross, the International Olympic Committee, the European Union, NATO, UNESCO and other international organizations. After English, French is the most frequently taught second language world wide. Canadian students have an excellent opportunity through the school system to learn two internationally important languages.
Learning French may increase educational and career opportunities. It may increase the personal enjoyment of travel and the arts. Bilingualism may increase flexibility of thinking and problem solving abilities. Learning a second language increases the understanding of and respect for other peoples and other cultures. The CPF website explains these and other benefits of learning French. It is also a good source of information about language learning opportunities outside of the classroom. |
